Mia walked out onto the patio and found Kate sitting there, sipping on her afternoon cup of coffee. She looked peaceful, but Mia was quite sure she was probably wound up in knots. That’s how her sister was most of the time, constantly worried about something, fretting over what she could’ve done better.

Of course, right now Mia was feeling much the same. Embarrassed by how she acted earlier, she had been looking forward to seeing Kate so she could profusely apologize.

“Mind if I join you?”

“Sure,” Kate said, still staring straight out into the yard.

“How was your day?”

“Oh, pretty much just doing damage control. I had lunch with Olivia Steele at the café and tried to apologize for my rambunctious little sister’s behavior.”

Mia chuckled under her breath. “Rambunctious little sister. I guess that’s one way to put it. Look, I’m really sorry, Kate. I screwed things up big time.”

“Ironically, Olivia had little problem with it. She is so much of a bulldog, I think she kind of appreciated that characteristic in you. So, I hope I kept her from writing something terrible about our business.”

“Did she leave?”

“No. Actually, she was planning to leave tomorrow afternoon anyway, so she’s somewhere around the property taking more pictures.”

“I promise to be on my best behavior from now until she leaves. If I have to offer to wash her feet or give her a back massage, I’ll do it.”

Kate laughed. “As someone who’s been on the receiving end of one of your massages, I would refrain from that. Your little hands feel like a guinea pig is giving me a massage.”

Mia leaned over and slapped her on the arm. “I can’t help it if I’m small!”

Before they knew it, they were laughing together again. Mia was so thankful that Kate had forgiven her, and that what she had done had not resulted in a really unpleasant situation.

“So, where is Lana?”

“Evie said she went for a walk on some of the trails earlier. I assume she slipped back into her room at some point. I know she’s requested chicken and dumplings for dinner, so I guess we will sneak a bowl up to her as soon as Olivia goes to bed.”

Mia nodded. “I wonder how long she’s planning to stay. I mean, I don’t have any problem with her being here because I know she’ll pay for her days, but it just feels like we can’t move about freely without possibly blowing her cover.”

“I don’t know how somebody gets into that situation. I mean she has all the money and fame in the world, and she’s still not happy. How can you be living your dream while simultaneously being miserable?”

“I totally understand it.”

Kate looked at her. “Well, that makes me sad. What do you mean?”

“Some things that Olivia was saying caused me to react because she has a point. I don’t travel because I feel like I have an obligation to this place. Plus, I’m scared to fly, so I’ve just avoided it. And I haven’t gotten married or had any kids, and those are two of my biggest dreams.
